Top Reasons to Move to Marylebone in London

Why move to Marylebone, London?

Located between Oxford Street to the south and Regent’s Park to the north, affluent Marylebone combines Georgian architecture and period properties with a strong community feel plus plenty of independent luxury and specialist boutiques.

There are also numerous delightful cafes and eateries, from cosy coffee shops to historic pubs, street-food vendors and Michelin-starred restaurants. At the same time, there are dozens of stalls in Aybrook Street every Sunday morning for the local farmers’ market, offering a wide range of excellent produce.

This part of the West End is a cultured retreat with a genuinely villagey feel in the heart of the city, so no wonder it’s considered one of the UK capital’s prime residential areas, popular with families, young professionals and celebrities alike. (You could spot high-profile local residents such as Madonna or Noel Gallagher here!)

As you’d expect in such a central district, transport links are excellent; Charing Cross is just 20 minutes away. Equally, Marylebone’s train station, a few minutes’ walk from the High Street, is in Zone 1 with connections to Birmingham, Banbury, Bicester, High Wycombe, Gerrard’s Cross, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Kidderminster. It also serves London Underground’s Bakerloo Line.

Meanwhile, the neighbourhood, which falls within the City of Westminster, is home to the internationally famous Baker Street (the base for fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and Madame Tussaud’s waxworks) and Harley Street, where many of the world’s best specialist doctors and surgeons practise.

What property is here?

As well as the above-mentioned Georgian architecture, you’ll find some fine Victorian and Edwardian buildings. In the 1700s, large swathes of Marylebone were in the hands of just a few rich families, some of whose names remain on street signs to this day, including Portman and Cavendish Squares.

Many of the big period homes are now apartment buildings, although there are some larger family homes towards Regents Park. Montagu Square is a popular, leafy location. The local student halls of residence give the district a youthful, buzzing feel, while high-end new-build apartments are appearing across the neighbourhood.

Green spaces, culture and great schools

It may be located in the heart of the city, but Marylebone has two of the best green spaces to be found anywhere in London – Regent’s Park to the north and Hyde Park to the south, with London Zoo also in the area. Additionally, just off Marylebone Road, Paddington Street Gardens comprises two parks which are very popular locally – the well-attended Marylebone summer festival takes place here each year.

Green Park, St James Park and Primrose Hill are all within striking distance, plus there are a number of gorgeous squares to amble through which add to the leafy feel and variety of open spaces, including Manchester, Portman and Bryanston Squares, alongside Park Crescent and Cavendish Square Gardens.

Meanwhile, local cultural hubs include the Wallace Collection, the Wigmore Hall and The Cockpit for live theatre events.

With families increasingly moving into the area, schools are obviously important. And some of the city’s most sought-after educational establishments are here, including Wetherby School, Marylebone Church of England School and Marylebone Boys’ School.

So if you’re looking to live in central London, you may well find Marylebone fits the bill perfectly.
